Why Tanning and Phototoxic Medications Are High Risk in Medical Aesthetic Treatments

At Vancoderm Clinic, your skin’s safety and long-term health are always our top priorities. That’s why we carefully evaluate all factors that could affect the outcome of your treatment—especially tanning habits and the use of phototoxic medications or skincare products.

The Risks of Tanning

Exposure to sun or artificial tanning devices can leave the skin in a sensitized and damaged state. Tanned skin reacts unpredictably to many clinical treatments and significantly increases the risk of complications.

Risks associated with tanning before treatment include:

  • Increased chance of burns and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), especially after procedures such as chemical peels, laser treatments, IPL, or microneedling

  • Unpredictable absorption of treatment energy or active ingredients, leading to inconsistent results

  • Slower healing and greater likelihood of uneven skin tone after treatment

The Risks of Phototoxic Products and Medications

Certain medications and topical products can make the skin more sensitive to light and heat. This sensitivity can cause the skin to react more aggressively during treatment, increasing the chance of irritation, blistering, or pigment changes.

Common phototoxic agents include:

  • Oral antibiotics such as doxycycline and tetracycline

  • Retinoids (both topical and oral)

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

  • Some antihistamines and diuretics

  • Essential oils, particularly those derived from citrus

  • Acne or pigmentation treatments with light-sensitizing ingredients

These substances can amplify the skin’s response to light-based treatments and even to minor thermal exposure, resulting in unwanted reactions.

How We Prioritize Your Safety at Vancoderm Clinic

Before proceeding with any treatment, our clinical team will:

  • Review your full medical and skincare history

  • Ask about recent sun exposure or tanning

  • Advise you on how to prepare your skin for treatment

  • Postpone or adjust treatments when necessary to protect your skin health
